MINES & GEOLOGY
OFFICE OF THE SENIOR GEOLOGIST, GROUNDWATER SURVEY, ZILLA PANCHAYAT, CHIKMAGALUR.
The office of the Geologist, Groundwater Survey in every district were established (1970) by Mines and Geology department, Government of Karnataka for scientific studies and assessment of groundwater potential. After the formation of Zilla Panchayats, these unit offices continued to work under Zilla Panchayat administation.
The main aim of this establishment is to conduct investigations regarding groundwater aspects which includes field studies, collection of information and analysing and reporting the results to department and the state Government. Apart from these, this office is also engaged in rendering technical advice to farmers, Government and Semi-Government organisations by selecting feasible sites for digging open wells and sinking bore wells for drinking and irrigation purposes.
This office conducts survey in about 100 Sq. kms., every year to understand the status of groundwater potential, utilisation and its chemical quality. This field investigation includes soil survey, Geology, Geohydrological aspects with inventorying all the irrigation wells , soil and collecting representative samples for analysis. The information collected will be compiled into a technical report and further submitted to Head Office of the department for evaluation and publishing.
WATER TABLE MONITORING
Apart from these works, every month water table monitoring in the district by recording watertable in 56 observation stations distributed widely across the district is being conducted. This is very useful to know groundwater fluctuation and storage variations.
Water sampling in each of the 56 observation wells is being carried out every summer to understand the chemical quality variations.
All the groundwater information collected is being added to groundwater data base in Data entry Software "GWDES".
Technical advice is being rendered to farmers by selecting feasible sites for sinking irrigation open well or bore wells. Feasibility report for sinking dug wells under bank loan schemes is being issued after technical inspection. Farmers will have to submit prescribed application form (attached at the end) alongwith RTC., and bank D.D. for Rs.200/- or 400/- along with the fee 12.36%s Service tax to be paid in cash for geohydrological or geophysical investigation respectively. The draft shall be in favour of Senior Geologist, GWS., Chikmagalur.
Semi-Government and private organisation can also obtain technical advice/site selection for drinking water wells by giving application for geohydrological or Geophysical investigation.
Government establishments can also obtain technical advice/ site selection by giving application with details of site and purposes.
